American Art Museum

Visiting art museums is one thing that has changed during COVID. I look forward to seeing crowds of people joining together to appreciate art in the near future. I grew up in NYC where there was always an annual school trip to the Metropolitan Museum of Art. It may seen like drudgery for a school age child, but it was always exciting to me.

Visiting museums for me has always been a type of quiet meditation and ritual. I often will go through a museum very deliberately so that I can be sure not to miss anything. When I find a piece that interests me, I will then stop and contemplate it from a far and then get close to see the details.

The American Museum of Art in Washington DC is unique. It is not only the largest collections of American art, but it is also provides an opportunity to learn about lesser known American history. The Portrait Gallery contains portraits of Americans from all walks of life and all time periods. The museum provides opportunities for everyone to look closer from an artistic and American Experience point of view. When we get closer to the details there is an opportunity to expand our understanding.

Here is my quick virtual tour of photos from my visits to the Museum of American Art.
